Mission means to send out or to go and do something.   For example, thge mission of Jesus Christ was to do God’s will (John 6: 38 – For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me ) and also to save sinners (Luke  19: 10 – for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost).  Mission can also mean a ‘command’.  For example, we are commanded in Matt 24:14 – And this Gospel of the Kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come;  Matt 28:18 – 20 Then Jesu came and spoke to the, saying, All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth, Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo I am with you always even to the end of the age).

What is the reason for the mission?  This is to show or reveal to us God’s love (John 3:16 – For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.  This also shows us Christ’s love (2 Cor 5: 14, 15) and Manknd’s need (Rom 3: 9 – 31).

Jonah was sent to preach the message of repentance to Ninevah (Jonah 3: 2-3); Philip preached the good news of salvation to the Samaritans (Acts 8:5); Paul and Barnabas were set aside by the Holy Spirit to begin missionary work (Acts 13: 1-4) and Matt 28:18-20 commands us to go and preach the good news to the ends of the earth.

Therefore we need to first of all repent of our sins, and then spread the word of God (reaching out to others)

Mission in the Pentateuch

The Pentateuch are the first five books of the Old Testament which were written by Moses.  These books are namely Genesis, Exodus, Levitivus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.  In the book of Genesis, we see God as the creator of the world.  Genesis 1:1 states that the world was without form and darkness was all around.  But God brought order to that world and created light, vegetation, etc and then created man to domminate the orderly world.  So we see in creation that God created something and  was able to see that what he had created was good.  God only spoke the word and we are able to see how Man fell into sin and that broke the relationship with God, God in his abundant mercies and love for mankind already had a plan of restoration for Adam.  God is a universal God.  When Adam sinned the whole world sinned.  God was able to call Abraham and tell him he would a father of all nations.  In Genesis we have creation, the fall and restoration of God’s people.

In Exodus we see God’s people living in slavery and bondage in Egypt and the universal God bringing them out of that slavery.   That exodus of God’s people shows how God was with them, how God knew of their suffering and made a way for other nations to see the greatness and power of God.  God greatness and strength was seen by other nations.
